Hair Loss Q & A
What Causes Hair Loss?
The reasons for hair loss may be due to illness, diet, medicine, hereditary, or childbirth. Certain hair care styling and certain products can also cause noticeable hair loss. Dermatologists recommend limiting the use of hair dye, blow dryers, flat irons, and rubber bands or hair clips that pull the hair tightly back. A stressful event can also contribute to hair loss.
Can Poor Nutrition Lead to Hair Loss?
Too much or too little of a nutrient or vitamin may contribute to hair loss. If the body does not receive enough protein or iron, you can see hair loss. Conversely, too many vitamins absorbed through vitamin supplements or medicines, can cause hair loss. Eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia can cause hair loss as well. A well-balanced diet will help to keep the body functioning properly.
How Do Dermatologists Treat Hair Loss?
There are many different treatments for hair loss. Once your dermatologist knows what is causing the hair loss, they can decide which treatment will be the best option for you. It is recommend that you begin treating hair loss as early as possible. One or more of the following treatments may be an option to treat your hair loss:
- Minoxidil: An FDA approved medicine that is applied to the scalp. It can stop hairs from getting thinner and stimulate hair growth.
- Laser devices: Brushes, combs, and other hand-held devices that emit laser light might stimulate hair growth.
- Prescription Medication: Finasteride and Corticosteroids are used to stimulate hair-regrowth or stop inflammation in the scalp.
Other procedures may include hair transplants, scalp reduction, scalp expansion, or scalp flaps which is where a segment of scalp is surgically moved and placed where hair is needed. Because so many different variables can be the reason for your hair loss, it may take a few appointments to pinpoint the exact cause.
